Find your future with us.Boeing Research and Technology (BR&T), the innovation engine of the Boeing Company, looking for an Autonomy Software Lead to develop technology to meet growing demands in the development of autonomous vehicles across Boeing businesses. Boeings autonomous platforms range from fighter aircraft to weapons to satellite systems to underwater/surface vehicles (e.g., the Boeing Wave Glider has the world record for the longest journey of an unmanned autonomous vehicle, from San Francisco, CA to Queensland, Australia) to commercial aircraft (flying cars). The role has a strong software focus the successful candidate will lead development of innovative autonomous capabilities in areas such as Detect and Avoid, Contingency Management, Multi-Vehicle Collaboration (Swarms), etc., for current and future Boeing platforms. The development of these capabilities include multi-disciplinary skills- algorithms development (including AI/ML), systems development and integration, knowledge of cloud computing/simulation at scale. This position will be based out of Huntington Beach, California.Position Summary:The Boeing Research and Technology (BR&T) Autonomous and Collaborative Technology team is seeking a talented, self-motivated software development lead to create future autonomy capabilities.This position will involve executing applied research projects in automated decision making, machine perception, multi-vehicle collaborative control and autonomy architectures that will enable innovative capabilities (e.g. Detect and Avoid, Contingency Management, Multi-vehicle collaborative mission management) for current and future Boeing products. Work will include leading technology development efforts to prove the feasibility of new capabilities and can include integration and maturation up through flight testing in available indoor and outdoor UAV testbeds. Software efforts will also include work with simulations, control stations, networking/communications systems and cloud computing to support the testing of the new capabilities.This position involves working in a dynamic team environment on small (1-2) to medium (3-6) person projects where excellent interpersonal and communication skills are needed. Due to the research nature of the work, project objectives and requirements are likely to evolve over the course of the project. A small amount of domestic travel to support integration, demonstration and customer engagement will be required.This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance for which the U.S. Government requires U.S. Citizenship.A final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.Position Responsibilities:

  • Provides technical leadership for software projects and leads software supplier management activities.
  • Develop, and deliver autonomy capability solutions, working closely with internal business stakeholders, across Boeing
  • Develop algorithms for sensing, perception and decision-making (including AI/ML algorithms)
  • Develop systems architectures, processes, tools to address unique verification and validation challenges, including certification
  • Leads development of code and integration of complex software components into a fully functional software system.
  • Leading software development in cloud computing environments (GCP, Azure, AWS)
  • Leading the integration, test and transition of capabilities with simulation, hardware-in-the loop, and flight test-beds; and onto the platforms themselves.
  • Integrate application software, operating systems, middleware (including e.g., ROS overlays), and sensing/computer hardware, to develop/deliver complete solutions
  • Use software best practices requirements analyses, architecture, design, code, and test to develop solutions
  • Use simulation-at-scale, and other methodologies to test different autonomy approaches
  • Work with and guide a global team of talented researchers across BR&Ts global R&D centers/presencein Spain, China, India, Australia and Brazil
  • Win and execute new business - lead CRAD proposal responses to DoD (DARPA/ARFL/ONR/ARL) solicitations, etc.; support existing DoD contracts, e.g., our DARPA Assured Autonomy contract
  • Prior experience with UAV and/or robotics testing is desired but not required
  • Coordinates activities across a global team of researchersBasic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
    • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or other technical degree
    • 4+ years of experience C, C++, C# and/or Python programming Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
      • Experience in simulation environments (e.g. Gazebo) and autonomy toolset (e.g. ROS) is highly desired.Typical Education/Experience:Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 9 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+4 years' related work experience, Master+7 years' related work experience).
